ReplyDeleteTerm: Roman Empire
Definition: The Roman Empire changed from a kingdom to a republic around 500 BC. It controlled much of Europe and all of the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
People: Plebians, Patricians, Emperor Justinian, Roman citizens
Dates: 500 BC to 500 AD (approximately)
Importance: The Roman plebians were the first to make a written set of laws, called the twelve tables. Those laws promised that every citizen had protection under the law and that the laws would be fairly upheld. The Romans also had a separate branched government, which was advanced for the time, but in times of crisis a dictator would be chosen to control both armies and government however they were limited to a six month term. Then Emperor Justinian also implemented a set of laws, called The Code which contained more than 5,000 Roman laws. Those laws were based on principles of reason being equal treatment under law, being innocent until proven guilty, and that any law that seemed unfair could be rewritten. The Romans gave the rest of the world the idea of a republic and also solidified the idea that a society needed written laws; but perhaps most importantly, Rome instigated ideals about equality that are still used in democratic practices today.
